In Narrative Learning Environments (NLEs)
students engage in technology-mediated activities where stories and narrations
play a central role to support learning.
This conference will focus on all aspects of
NLEs, i.e., on using narrative in technology-enhanced learning environments and
exploiting its educational potential.
Its aim
is to provide an arena for discussion on NLEs in order to:
- contribute to the development of this emergent research field;
- strengthen
the links and relationships among researchers, scholar and teachers interested
on NLEs;
- explore inexpensive ways to promote interaction and collaboration
in this research field.
It does not
require participants to travel, hence allowing them to save time and money.
Moreover, online discussions allows participant to express her/his ideas, as
well as to follow parallel discussions, more than it is possible in traditional
conferences.
In order to fit at best in the schedule of many different people, the
conference will be completely asynchronous and last more days than usual
conferences. However, participation does not require much time every day and
can be split in small slots over the conference duration.
An online event can be a good source of learning for all participants, and a
good way to get to know other people who work on the same topic, so as to
establish possible collaborations. The qualifier “working” in the title aims to
underline that the success of such initiative strongly depends on participants’
involvement.
The
conference is open to all aspects of NLE. If you want to make sure that some
aspect of your interest will be discussed, please consider to contribute a
discussion starter on it. All proposals
will be reviewed by a group of experts to make sure that they are suitable to
start a discussion and on topic.
This is a
stimulating, or even provocative, short paper (600 to 1200 words), aiming to
start up a lively discussion on open issues and problematic aspects of NLEs.
Its structure should include a short introduction to the considered issue, your
claims and questions, only essential bibliography.
Prospective
participants can propose a discussion starter or simply take part in the
discussion. Discussion starters will be grouped into several discussion streams
that will develop in parallel. Each participant will be allowed to take part in
one or more streams of her/his choice, or in all of them.
If
you wish to propose a discussion starter , please send a summary of 1 to 2 pages to dettori@itd.cnr.it by September 15 .
If your proposal will be accepted, you will be asked
to prepare a 5-minute presentation to be shared online.
If
you only wish to take part in the discussion , please write by September
15 your intention to participate, specifying what previous experience you
have with NLEs and with online activities, to dettori@itd.cnr.it. Further
information will be sent in due time to all registered people.
Nothing! Participation is free, but you must register to take part in the
conference, by sending a mail as specified above.
If the
discussion will be alive, many ideas will raise, and we can think to work out
some kind of publication starting from it. In any case, participants will have
the great advantage to get in touch and possibly establish scientific
connections with other researchers, scholars and teachers interested in the
educational use of narrative within technology-mediated learning environments.
This conference is organized by the Special Interest Groups Narrative
and Learning Environments (SIG NLE) of the
Kaleidoscope European Network
of Excellence.
The SIG NLE is active in the field of NLEs
since 2004. It has gained a good amount of experience on online activities with
two successful courses on NLE carried for the Virtual Doctoral School of
Kaleidoscope.
